Linda Francis’ Summer Makeover

This Summer ALG Style had the most wonderful opportunity to provide a style makeover to a most deserving and gracious woman. Linda Francis by profession is a home care provider for a loving couple. The company Linda works for held a contest for their employees to which they needed to nominate themselves and provide a video to explain “Why they deserved a makeover from ALG Style?”
Linda’s Rap and Hip-hop inspired video with her elderly couple was not only touching but down right HYSTERICAL! (For legal reasons we cannot share.) However, Linda’s wit and gumption made her the front runner for this incredible makeover.

We thoroughly enjoyed every moment with this enthusiastic angel of a woman. We loved her willingness to take chances with her style and in her life. When Linda is not working with her family as a Care Giver she is a real estate agent for Keller- Williams and minister in her church.

Her clothing and hair needed to reflect her outgoing personality and busy lifestyle. We choose fabrics and styles that are appropriate for her job and could be fun for a night out. Linda loves that we suggest a “Pop!” of happiness with every outfit not matter if she is headed to the grocery, working in the home with her couple, or showing a new property. She learned to embrace a bold accessory but keep the outfit simple and if she chooses a beautiful colorful print, have the accessories remain simple. Classic staples like a jean jacket were selected to interchange with ensembles to remain polished and professional.

Linda’s Grand Prize Included-

A Shopping Spree at Lakeside Mall
Cut, Color & Style with Paris Parker Aveda
Make-up Lesson with Brooke Rafidi of Aliya
A Closet Makeover and Style Assessment with ALG Style
A Personal Shopping Trip with ALG Style
An in home Outfitting & Packing Session with ALG Style

The world needs more Lindas. We are honored to have her as a client and her spirit touched us all. To find out more about all that she does, read the little paragraph below)

Talk Derby to Me

Corrie Pellerin of ALG Style can find any reason to celebrate. She lives for a good party, a chic outfit, and a great cocktail. She is everyone’s go-to girl to make everything perfectly pretty. Also if you know anything at all about ALG Style and most especially Corrie… every idea, photo shoot, style session, birthday, MUST HAVE A THEME! If you did not know any better you would swear that Corrie Pellerin was the genius behind Pinterest.

Corrie Does Derby

Throwing a party one of my favorite pastimes. This particular event was a request from my dear friend’s boyfriend, Hudson, to host a welcome home gathering for his lady friend. I also needed a reason to continue the merriment stemming from two Jazz Fest weekends and honestly I was dying to wear my new pink tutu party skirt. Luckily, or perhaps fate, the Kentucky Derby was the following Saturday. The Kentucky Derby is more than a horse race; it’s a long-standing tradition of merriment, mint juleps, and a fine chapeau seemed like excellent reason for to revel.

I delegated tasks to my friends Hudson, whose expertise was best suited in the culinary and cocktail duties, and the very organized, Elizabeth, who found the traditional sterling silver cups for our juleps and compiled the guest list.

We used Highlights Catering, (504) 485-0756. Their sweet potato ham sandwiches are a particular favorite of mine, and I adore a good deviled egg. Everything at Highlights Catering will knock your socks off and they will deliver! Hudson also supplied crawfish, BBQ, Beer and the fixings for our Mint Juleps. (Mint Julep recipe – )

Continuing with our theme, Cookies by Design; (504) 455-8777 created horses and derby hats for an extra treat. They were very accommodating and worked with our very short time line.

I wanted to keep the décor simple and red roses, consistent with the theme and history of the Derby, were a perfect touch. Whole Foods was able to pull some aside some beautiful stems at that last minute. To save money I recruited my talented gal pal, Lindsey. She has mad skills and a knack for floral design and beautiful handwriting. She crafted the cutest sign for the shin dig.

Games are a perfect party mixer to engage your guests and everyone loves a good game of chance and stakes. Since Hudson and Elizabeth are not bookies by trade…we placed all the horses’ names in a bowl and allowed everyone to pick. In order to play each dropped in a $20.00. Here are some other ways to do a pool.

Snapshots with props are added way to add amusing elements to your gathering. We used a Polaroid – Mini and silly props which can be purchased at Michael’s and Hobby Lobby.

Stay tuned for more stylish ways to enhance any party! Are they’re off! You can reach us at 504.237.1104

We like to party!

We plan outfits for our shindigs like most people plan their grocery list. Some people meal prep on the weekends, we outfit prep. There are always numerous networking events, social gatherings, and charity parties to attend; E-vites, invites, tickets, and tables… we can never make them all.  Many frequent these gatherings to dance, eat, scoop up auction items for a tax write – off, or show their support to those in need.  We, to be entirely honest, go to check out the ensembles of the guests.  If people watching were a sport in the Olympics, ALG would win a gold medal and be on the fashion Wheaties box.

Sometimes these events make it very difficult to figure out the proper codes of dress.  The amalgamation of an antiquated city and an influx of young professionals to the region can create an interesting interpretation of what is appropriate attire at New Orleans’ gatherings.  Also the dress codes on the invite and the actual location of the party can cause quite a conundrum when attempting to decipher what one is and is not supposed to wear.  One of the most the most confusing invites we received read, “Casual Cocktail.” Now according to the Emily Post bible there is “Causal attire” and then there is “Cocktail attire.” We would seriously show up in flip flops and a short fit & flair dress with sequins if this were our literal understanding.

ALG would like to provide a bit of style support on planning your attire for social fundraiser/event/gala/gathering du jour:

Classy not Trashy –  Think about who may be at this event. Will your boss or grandparents of your new boyfriend be present? Is this a gathering that has large corporate sponsors? Is this event one that has been around for decades? If yes was replied to any of the above questions keep your dress and shoes tasteful.

Rise to the Occasion Check out social media pictures from past events to get an idea of what guests have worn in the past.  Certain events in the city of New Orleans used to be very formal and black tie.  Currently formal attire on many gatherings are reserved for the hosts/chairpersons.  We have moved towards a dressy cocktail world in order to attract a younger crowd and keep the events fun and accessible to all.

It’s Easy to be Cheesy – Sheer or illusion fabric, bedazzling, platform heels appear cheap.  No matter what age you are “Stripper Chic” not a good look.   Find a dress that flatters your figure and accentuates your best features.

The Dogs Are Tired – Test drive those shoes! Bare feet at a party is an ALG Style “no, no.”  If the event happens to be at a park or on rocky terrain, we suggest a cute pair of sandals or fold up ballet shoes to put in your clutch. We applaud the geniuses at Zoo-to Do this year who were selling 20$ flats! Amazing and bless you! Brilliant!

My Momma Don’t Like You –  Unfortunately we live in a world that perception is reality and first impressions are hard to erase.  These events can be a ton of fun, a great way to network, and if you a single…of course meet some new “friends.” Take pride in your appearance and attire.  You never know who you might bump into.

As always ALG Style is available for your fashion 911.  We are forever your fashion fairy godmothers.  We too can be a big haute mess at times and place no judgement on anyone.  Please feel free to give us a shout out and we would be honored to solve any fashion dilemma. You can reach us at 504.237.1104

Zumba has everybody thinking they can dance…

It’s unfortunate that you cannot keep beat to save your soul, regardless of how many Bud Lights you consume. Don’t fret — everyone around you thinks they can dance too.

And as long as you look good, no one will notice. ALG Style will not be able to teach you how to bust a move, but we can assist in dressing you in fantastic festival frocks. This year’s festival and spring fashion line-up are going to make you want to rock, roll and rave until you cannot see straight.

Thanks to Facebook, Instagram, Snap Chat, and the celebrity infused faux-festival Coachella, our local festivals have turned into a fashion show. The outer track at Jazz Fest is a Mecca for stylish selfie-taking fashionistas, and the outfits inside of the Gospel and Jazz tents rival those of New York Fashion Week.

Get Stoned
Spring 2016 rocks and rolls with styles and trends that are ideal for our NOLA climate and perfect for festival ensembles. ALG Style is also thrilled to announce the hip new boutique in the South Market District of downtown New Orleans. Nestled amongst equally chic restaurants, boutiques, fitness clubs and the always on-trend Hattie Sparks boutique, Stonefree Boutique is the new go-to stop for all your spring/summer event outfits. Although well-appointed, the boutique seems effortlessly chic, from the sexy bohemian dresses to the worn rugs that are nonchalantly scattered on the floor.

We had a moment to catch up with Megan Koch, the owner of Stonefree, for a quick Q&A about her sweet new boutique. Koch is originally from St. Louis with a fashion and retail résumé spanning from Los Angeles to Dallas, and she finally landed in New Orleans. Stonefree opened its doors about 10 months ago and Koch has been enjoying the chaotic ride. South Market District is quickly becoming known as the see-and-be-seen place to be in NOLA. “The community and businesses down here are growing daily,” Koch says. “And we are thrilled to be a part of it.”

Like ALG Style, Stonefree is ecstatic about this year’s spring fashions and coordinating these must-have styles with festival season. Trends to look for this spring/summer are off-the-shoulder tops, subtle leather and suedes in pastels, more fringe and denim. Thankfully, 2016 focuses on simplicity and ease, which is the only way to survive our hot and sticky days, especially at French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest. “My own ensembles are all about comfort, especially at Jazz Fest, where it is as much about the food as it is about the music,” Koch says. “I keep it loose and breezy; I do not want to be reminded I went for that third bowl of Crawfish Monica.”

Like a Girl Scout
Not only is Koch a smart buyer, but she is a seasoned Jazz Fester. She and her family travel from all over to celebrate Jazz Fest, and she has to be prepared. She suggests a cute hat by Brixton, a flowing maxi by Jet Set Dairies or some denim cut-offs by One Teaspoon, all carried at Stonefree. Additionally, although not particularly stylish and sexy (yet extremely important), in her bag are sunscreen and hand sanitizer. “An insider tip is a Cooler Backpack by Intracoastal Outfitters,” she says. This purchase, made by her boyfriend, was a “game changer” for Koch.

Stonefree is a wonderful respite in the middle of downtown. Koch welcomes you with a glass of wine and a relaxing atmosphere. Even if you are not headed out to shake what your momma gave you at Wednesday at the Square or any festival du jour, you can find great denim and accessories to make you feel like you should. Take a walk and a field trip to the South Market District, and visit Stonefree to find all your summer staples.

Happy shopping, happy festival and boogie your bum off!

Mega Metamorphosis

One of our favorite local boutiques now has a new location — and a bevy of new merchandise to match.

Jan. 1 is one of my favorite days of the year. It is a day that holds promise and hope. It is a time of reflection on the past and to embrace self-improvement, set goals and get excited about what lies ahead. We tend to go toward what is comfortable, habitual and easy. Many of us make a conscious attempt every day to change, and change is hard. Whether it is the choice not to stop at District: Donuts. Sliders. Brew. in the morning, stalk your ex-anything on social media or pass up a Happy Hour and instead choose to pass out at CrossFit, a true transformation of self and soul is a challenge.

The New Year gives us the opportunity to try new things. It can be as simple as trying a new lipstick hue, or as difficult as trying to become more sensitive to others. At ALG Style, we are always attempting to nudge people out of their comfort zone. We want women and men to look and feel like themselves (only better), and, with a few small tweaks and subtle changes, we make that happen. For men, it might be as effortless as purchasing denim that fits properly from our friends at Saks Fifth Avenue and, for women, it could be highlights to brighten up a complexion from Paris Parker Aveda Salons and Spas.

In keeping with a new theme in the New Year, we are particularly excited about a favorite old shopping haunt — Angelique Boutiques — that now has a new location! Angelique Palumbo-Weiser opened her original Maple Street location in 2001 and has since grown the business to include Angelique Shoe, Angelique Kids and now, 14 years later, Angelique Boutique in Lakeview. Palumbo-Weiser is happy to be in an area close to her heart; this location was predestined. “I grew up in Lakeview; I live in Lakeview; this is my home,” she says. “I have always wanted to have my store here.”

Each of the Angelique Boutiques is singular, but all still have a harmonious theme of polished chicness exclusive to each respective neighborhood. These posh yet sweet boutiques are perpetually ahead of trends. Angelique Boutiques provides customers with everything from the basic wardrobe requirements for a morning ride to carpool to a selection of sassy and stunning attire for a night on the town.

Heather Rutherford Catalanotto, a long time Angelique alum, started as the manager at the Maple Street location. She currently is the co-owner of Angelique on Magazine Street and the new location in Lakeview. She and her young family are residents of the Lakeview area. “I am so excited to bring reasonably priced fashion to the lake front and be part of the tremendous rebirth of Lakeview,” she says.

The Lakeview location, managed by Gabrielle Kantor, is inviting, relaxed and just downright fun. Nestled between the sno-ball stand and Mondo New Orleans, the store is an organic addition to the family friendly, walkable and whimsical Harrison Avenue thoroughfare. “As a child I frequented this sno-ball stand, and we went to the pet store,” Palumbo-Weiser says. “Now I bring my children here, and I work here.”

Angelique Lakeview has affordable pieces that cover you from head to toe, with party dresses that are perfect for Mardi Gras luncheons and comfy kicks by Superga to chase after toddlers. Embracing change and all that is new for 2016, the girls at Angelique urge you to take chances. “Denim every way, shape or form is trending for the upcoming season,” Catalanotto says. Take a risk in 2016 wearing a denim jumpsuit or a denim dress, or by toting a denim handbag.

Meanwhile, Palumbo-Weiser loves venturing out with new lipstick hues. “One of my latest favorites is from the MAC Spring Collection, in Candy Yum Yum,” she says. “It is a bright pink, perfect for that pop of color to your outfit!”

Style Cornucopia

Last week we had, again, the pleasure of working with WWL TV, Paris Parker Aveda, and Nola Shoes & Accessories for our monthly ALG Style Makeover.

Although Thanksgiving is a time to be gracious and thankful for all our blessings, it can also be a stressful time for those that have to host a large family dinner or travel with little ones. Our winner, Emily Reese Schneller, had a double whammy. Not only is Emily hosting a staff party for her trainers at Cross Fit Roux, the gym she owns with her husband, Bradley Schneller, she is also cooking Thanksgiving for one side of her family and traveling to visit another with her beautiful little boy Brennan.

We were thrilled to assist with some travel and hostess tips for this busy and sassy momma!

ALG choose a shift dress by Constant Threads in a stunning royal blue; this hue is flattering on most and suiting on brunettes. The Constant Threads’ dress is machine washable, perfect for gravy spills and little one’s hands, wrinkle resistant, and fits her petite frame. Her clutch, from NOLA Shoes & Accessories, is ideal to place in a large travel or diaper bag to keep her essentials organized. We also adore the statement necklace for a pop of color. The ensemble is Throw & Go! Constant Threads makes the most functional and fun pieces; these dresses are a must-have for every busy girl’s closet.

Tatum Neill and his team, at Paris Parker Aveda, is consistently spot on with cut, color, and make-up. We appreciate the style tips Tatum shared for an effortlessly coiffed mane, the subtle “baby-lights” highlights, and the fresh-faced make-up.
We hope that Emily has a very blessed and stress-free holiday and we, at ALG Style, are very blessed to have worked with such a talented team of individuals!
